Local people. Local action.

Sibarunun is part of Indonesia’s Telo Islands. MRM works with local partner Ifan and the local team on a community-based shoreline cleanup and monitoring program shaped around local conditions and practical needs.

How cleanup works

The team collects and separates debris by material, weighs it, takes photographs, and completes daily records. These records document the material collected, cleanup time, and the work involved in handling debris responsibly.

The program supports paid local cleanup work and builds a field record that can inform practical improvements over time.

What happens to the material?

Debris is separated by material, weighed, photographed, and recorded. Transport, recycling, and disposal arrangements are being developed for this remote island setting.

Collection totals describe material collected. They do not confirm that every bag has reached a recycling facility or final disposal site. Project updates distinguish completed activities from next steps.

Monthly shoreline monitoring

Cleanup records describe the material removed and the effort involved. Repeat shoreline surveys document the debris observed using a consistent method. Keeping these records separate helps us understand both the work completed and changes along the shoreline.

The project’s monitoring approach uses NOAA’s Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP) protocol: a fixed 100-meter shoreline site, with four randomly selected transects, each five meters wide, surveyed monthly.

Using NOAA’s method does not imply NOAA funding or endorsement.
