Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP)
MDMAP is NOAA’s community science program for recording the amount and types of marine debris found along shorelines. Standardized surveys help communities track debris over time and support research, education, outreach, and prevention.
How MRM Uses the Method
MRM uses the NOAA protocol at a fixed 100-meter shoreline site, surveying four randomly selected five-meter transects each month.
These standardized observations are separate from cleanup totals, which record debris removed, labor, transport, and disposal.
