Seafood with a story

FishTrax Marketplace helps seafood dealers and retailers share where their seafood was caught and who caught it. By connecting that information with seafood as it moves to market, the platform gives customers a clearer connection to their food and to the fishermen behind it.

Our history

Our roots reach back to 1989, and our charitable work has been tax-exempt since 1993. We began with a commitment to connect fisheries research, coastal businesses, and the people who depend on healthy marine resources.

In 2005, we joined fishermen, scientists, and resource managers in Project CROOS (Collaborative Research on Oregon Ocean Salmon). Through this work, we explored how genetic information and catch-location data could help identify salmon stocks and inform fishery management. The project received early grant support from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, as well as support from the Oregon Innovation Council and federal fishery disaster-relief funds.

In 2008, we piloted a seafood traceability program with Newport fishermen catching albacore. Barcodes connected each fish to information about its catch and journey through processing and sale. This brought research into the marketplace and helped customers learn more about the fish and the fisherman who caught it.

Our earlier Seafood Consumer Center and Community Seafood Initiative work supported coastal businesses through seafood education, workshops, and business development. Together, those efforts helped provide more than $2 million in investments and loans to coastal seafood companies. During this early period, program-service revenue was $245,331 in fiscal year 2009, and contributions totaled $476,609 in fiscal year 2010.

In 2013, we reorganized as Fish Trax Systems, Inc., focusing increasingly on electronic fisheries information systems. We developed FishTrax Marketplace with Oregon State University, the Oregon Salmon Commission, Advanced Research Corporation, and Ariel Seafoods. Marketplace revenue has supported collaborative fishery research and development.

In 2026, we rebranded as Marine Resource Management and expanded our scope of work while staying true to our founding mission. We continue to connect research, practical tools, and community partnerships in support of healthy marine resources and resilient coastal communities.
