Our first marine debris collection day on Sibaranun is in the books! Today, Ifan and his wife cleaned about 100 meters of shoreline and collected 10 kilograms of recyclable plastics and other human-made trash. It’s an exciting start to a community-led effort to care for the islands’ beaches and build a practical path for collected waste.
This stretch of beach is in front of an artisanal fishing canoe launch site. To keep the launch usable for boats, natural beach materials were cleared from this area too. They will be composted on adjacent property.
On future collection days, natural materials will be left on beaches that are not regularly used for beach access or boat launching. Natural materials are an important part of the shoreline, and they are not included in our marine debris collection weights. The weights focus on the human-made trash collected.
Thank you to Ifan and his wife for getting this work underway. One hundred meters of shoreline, 10 kilograms of trash, and a meaningful first step for Sibaranun.
