About Marine Resource Management

Marine Resource Management brings together science, community, and creativity to support healthy oceans and thriving coastal communities.

Our mission is to connect research and local knowledge with practical action that conserves marine environments and supports the people who depend on them.

Our History

MRM’s history began in 1989, with charitable tax-exempt status established in 1993. Through the Seafood Consumer Center and Community Seafood Initiative, we supported coastal businesses with seafood education, workshops, and business development. Those efforts helped provide more than $2 million in investments and loans to coastal seafood companies.

In 2005, MRM joined fishermen, scientists, and resource managers in Project CROOS, using genetic information and catch-location data to better understand salmon stocks and inform fisheries management. In 2008, a seafood traceability pilot with Newport albacore fishermen connected seafood with its origin and the people who caught it.

In 2013, Fish Trax Systems, Inc. was launched. Working with Oregon State University, the Oregon Salmon Commission, Advanced Research Corporation, and Ariel Seafoods, we developed FishTrax Marketplace. The platform remains active today under Ariel Seafoods management. In 2026, we reorganized as Marine Resource Management and broadened our work across marine conservation, coastal livelihoods, education, and the arts.

Our Work

Today, we connect research and local knowledge with practical action. Our work includes marine debris cleanup, community microloans, marine ecology, seaweed mariculture, education, and Art for Science, supporting healthier marine environments and resilient coastal communities.
